www.privateairny.com Private Air New York | Winter 2016 89 DESIGN Michelle's personal aesthetic was influenced greatly by the Golden Age of Hollywood – specifically the era of 1940s to the 1960s. Having been raised in Los Angeles environs she used to take Sunday drives with her mother to see some of the fabulous homes of those early stars of stage and screen. row in a little kitsch along with the revolutionary vision of the likes of Sister Parrish and Albert Hadley and you have the sensibility and youthfulness of the interior design mind of Michelle Workman. She adores the eclectic but very glamorous style of the era because when it is all pulled together, it is the elegance of the furnishings that fit a home and those who live in it. Having had numerous celebrities and actors as clients has given her the insight necessary to work with busy individuals. Knowing how to tell the story of a family or a person through incorporating the things that they value as meaningful is the basis of her design philosophy. "When I do a review at the end of an installation, some of my clients are brought to tears. Oft-times, men are surprised to realize how much a well thought out, and well designed home means to them as well." Michelle has been in business since early 2000 and she has traveled far and wide to arrange homes at a variety of locales, both urban and suburban. She enjoys finding things from estate sales and local artisans that can be important to the overall meaning of the area. For example, the vintage mid-century sofa newly recovered in Schumacher fabric. "Because I work everywhere including New York, I have access to workrooms all over the country that allows me to create the finest interiors that tell the story of the homeowner…their history, achievements and dreams; that's what a home is to me." We might also add: "Have Design Will Travel" to her design philosophy.
