DINING
W
alk into Fresco by
Scotto, Midtown
Manhattan's beloved
temple to Italian
fare, and the first
thing you notice – after the tantalizing
scents wafting through the restaurant,
of course – is that everyone seems to
be having a fabulous time. When we
visited in March, it was one of those dark,
blustery days that can leave winter-worn
New Yorkers feeling a bit on the surly side,
but at the buzzing eatery on 52nd Street
spring was already in the air. Flowering
branches explode from the Tuscan urn
on the polished copper bar, waiters bustle
about, diners are chatting animatedly,
glasses are raised in countless toasts and
from her perch at the hostess stand in
the front of the house, Marion Scotto is
welcoming guests with a big smile, a warm
handshake… and the occasional hug.
"People are sometimes surprised to find us
at the restaurant, but we're almost always
here," says the matriarch. "Even on our
days off, you'll usually find us wandering
in at some point. We like being here." e
"us" Marion refers to include members
of the Scotto clan - namely Anthony Jr.,
Elaina and Rosanna- who together with
mom, are the familiar faces of Fresco by
Scotto.
