56 Private Air Luxury Homes ARTS & COLLECTIBLES By E.J. Webber Photography Courtesy of Cahiers d'Art / Pablo Picasso par Christian Zervos C ahiers d 'Art, one of the world's most distinguished publishers of catalogued art of the early 20th century, have announced their plans to re- publish the quintessential Pablo Picasso Catalogue Raisonné, begun by Christian Zervos in 1932. is historic event, the first of its kind in Cahiers history, will celebrate the publishing of the first-ever English translation. e catalogue is 33 volumes with over 16,000 painting and drawings and represents a lifetime of collaboration between Zervos and Picasso. Sotheby's is to be the exclusive worldwide distributor of the highly sought after catalogue simply known as the Zervos, after the founder. Re-published separate English and French editions will be available for discriminating collectors and art enthusiasts after February 15, 2014 for $20,000. Christian Zervos dedicated his life to Picasso, and it is a momentous event to the art and collecting world that Cahiers d 'Art, founded by Zervos in 1926, will re-launch his fundamental work in both English and French for collectors, dealers, and scholars. Complete sets of the Zervos are exceedingly rare. Merely to remind us again of the legendary influence of Picasso, several of his works rank among the most expensive paintings in the world. One entitled, Garçon à la Pipe, sold for $104 million at Sotheby's in 2004, establishing a new price record. Another painting of Picasso's lover called Dora Maar au Chat, sold for $95.2 million, again at Sotheby's in 2006. As of 2004, Picasso remains the top ranked artist based on sales of his works at auctions according to art market trends reports and remains the third most famous artist only after Michelangelo and Rembrandt. e art world's famed Picasso scholar and magazine editor, Christian Zervos, was born in Greece in 1889, raised in Alexandria, Egypt and permanently settled in Paris at the age of 22. Soon affiliating himself in 1924 with a publishing company, where as editor, he met artists such as Matisse, Braque, Léger, and Picasso. Zervos left the company in 1926 to found his own journal, Cahiers d 'Art, noted for their presentations, layout, and content. He collaborated with scholars and critics of various art fields to create monographs of Rousseau, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Matisse, among others. Having become a close friend of Picasso, Zervos decided that Picasso's work would become his own life's work; a cataloguing of Picasso's output was thus begun. e catalogue today is 33 volumes and remains the elixir of both of the great artists works. e creation of legendary art history requires legendary men such as Picasso and Zervos. It also needs the energy, stewardship, and interest of Swedish collector, Staffan Ahrenberg, who purchased the historic Cahiers publication house and gallery, and the rights to the Zervos Picasso Catalogue. Ahrenberg has put together an unsurpassed team of art experts and specialists to breathe life back into Cahiers d 'Art. Not only that, but the company has opened an additional gallery space devoted to editions at 15 Rue du Dragon, the original Zervos gallery location on the left bank of Paris since 1926. e tradition of partnerships with artists will be seen as the continuing goal of Ahrenberg and his team. ey have begun exploration and potential collaboration with Ellsworth Kelly and the Calder Foundation. Serious collectors will want to not only own the Picasso reference work, but other editions to come. C The Long Awaited Zervos Picasso Catalogue from Cahiers D'Art is Here
