Pavlina Alea was born Pavlina Paraskova in 1978 in Bulgaria.
She attended the Iliya Petrov National High School for Fine Arts in the capital, Sofia,
and later enrolled in the prestigious National Academy of Art where the artist Christo had studied before her.
There she earned an MFA in painting. In 1992, she was accepted on a full-tuition scholarship
to the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the first art school and art museum in the United States,
established in 1805. Since then, Alea has exhibited widely at important galleries and art fairs
throughout the United States. Her underwater portraits are widely collected
and she has been the recipient of many private commissions
including a number of public art projects that she has undertaken with her husband, artist Alfredo Alea.
