For the Swedes, mid-summer's eve is the start of a happy season enjoyed under a sun that sets for just a brief hour or two each day – all the more time to enjoy those warm, carefree days. How befitting then that a summer holiday in the Hamptons can be made all the more special with a stay at one of the areas most delicious boutique hotels that also happens to be delightfully Swedish. Välkommen to 'c/o' e Maidstone. e Osborne family built the landmark building that serves to house the tony Maidstone in the days preceding the Civil War. At one point used as a tannery and later as an inn for weary travelers, the original building still exists, but the jubilant Swedish-inspired jumble of prints and color it sports now bears little resemblance to the utilitarian structure it once was. In its current incarnation as a chic Hamptons refuge, e Maidstone is the eclectic brainchild of Jenny Ljungberg who purchased the property in 2008. Working with the notable likes of Nadia Tolstoy – yes, that Tolstoy –e Maidstone underwent a complete transformation to create a property that allows guests to feel as if they're visiting the home of some chicly quirky Swedish aunt rather than staying in a hotel. "When a guest first calls us," explains front office manager India Koster, "We'll try to get a sense of his or her style to place them in a room we think they'll really enjoy." In the case of my recent visit to the Maidstone, it was the Josef Frank room, a groovy yet graceful cacophony of bright prints and cozy spaces overlooking the garden. Joining the Josef Frank offering are 15 other unique accommodations plus three cottages, each with its own signature sense of style.
